I've decided our diet needs revamping. With one of us working forty plus hours a week, the second going to school full time plus managing a home, and the third consuming his day in play, sleep and eat, we're rather busy. We've often delegated our nutrition to fast-food America. I've seen no benefits monetarily, health wise, or in spiritual aspects (cultivating the fruit of the Spirit). Not that a burger here and there is a bad thing, but really, 2 times a week is 2 times too many.
I started this total overhaul when I watched the documentary Food Inc. Please understand that I've become no fanatic, but a soul whose conscience has been deeply pricked. I not only am abhorred by the nutrition value of fast food (and most of what is contained with in the four walls of the grocery store), but mostly I am upset by how we've maintained our resources. Yes, lets go green because its good for the environment, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm no tree hugger, and really not a lover of chickens, pigs and cows either. But, I cannot abide by the treatment those animals are given. Not to mention the workers on the farms and in the processing warehouses.
We have been given all these resources (and we employ people like ourselves) by our merciful God. His creation is important to him and therefore should be important to us. He has given us all things so that we may praise him in all things, including our diet. How our diet is maintained: raising animals, employing people, cultivating the soil... should praise him. This comes down to how we spend our money at the grocery store, the way we prepare our food, and whom we buy it from.
I'm not sure how all these convictions will come to fruition in my household. I know that change usually happens slowly, and I know that all of the implementation I would like to make will come as time and money allow. Until then, for the glory of God and the benefit of my family I will try to make the changes in our diet that will ensure on my part that I am a better steward of the resources the Lord has given me.
Please, let me know how you've attempted to do honor God with your meals, budget, etc. Please also know that I am as guilty as anyone for the way I've turned a blind eye to my practices for the sake of not wanting to feel guilty. This is something on my heart, and please don't feel condemned by my post, but rather encouraged that I'm in the trenches of overhauling our menu in a way that will help my family to become good stewards.
* I know there are scriptures that elude to this principle as well; I do not have them off the top of my head but hope to find them and post them here.

I was just convicted about this stuff today, after pulling through a drivethrough and tossing each of the girls a cheeseburger in the back seat. I thought, "oh it's ok to splurge once in awhile. it's a treat for them (and we were hungry)." Then I thought about other "treats" that are also bad for us... like smoking, pornography, and watching bad movies. Now, I don't indulge in ANY of those because they're bad for me and not honoring to God. Why would I allow myself to indulge my children in a "treat" that is doing them more harm than good??? It is a little different than pornography, obviously, but I still think we've become a little numb as a culture. Our food choices are killing us, and we're not considering the fact that we're misusing God's resources and abusing his creation in order to make those choices. Food seems to be an area that is outside the realm of accountability. Don't even start talking about gluttony in this culture!
I might be starting a mini series on my own blog about this. I feel the fire burning again...
Yeah, I've thought about blogging on my "new" cooking/nutrition endeavors. :)
Really good points, Becca! Thanks!
