Tis the Christmas full of Disney (fa-la-la-la-lame)! I've been searching for Christmas gifts for nieces and nephews this Christmas and walking up and down the toy aisle has convinced me that miss "Teen Pop Senstation" ie: Hannah Montana is just as popular as when she started in 2006 ( yes, thats right... I know when the t.v. show started!). But, to confuse matters for poor little girls (and me), Disney has added not only High School Musical (1,2,& 3!) but also Camp Rock. Why? I'm assuming that Disney removed The Mickey Mouse Club and replaced it with seperate pop star shows.
My two oldest nieces have grabbed on to these new Disney shows and are running with them. I don't think I've seen one Barbie on the shelf. It's all Diseny's fabulous character dolls.
I'm starting to think that Christmas is no longer about toys (try telling that to a 6 year old). I'm sure Corporate America won't believe me either. Perhaps it should be more about the memories associated with Christmas. So many mothers complain of having their houses fully crammed with useless, unplayed-with toys. However, it is still fun to have something to unwrap under the tree.
I guess we'll see what the outcome of this Christmas is. Our latest idea for the kids is to make memories with them rather than give them lots of toys. We may end up doing a bit of both due to a change in plans, but when you're my age and my sister-in-law's age, you start to remember what was fun about Christmas- its not the toys. Do you even remember what you got each of the Christmases you've been alive? Probably not, but I bet you remember the memories with aunts, uncles, grandma & grandpa and cousins.
(Disclaimer: I admit to watching Hannah Montana however, I will not encourage the watching of said show by children under the age of 10.)
